Raspberry PI Google AIY Voice Kit Project | Part I

Written by Anthony Berardi

We are going to start our Raspberry PI Google AIY Voice Kit project. The objective is to convert a Raspberry PI Model B+ 512mb unit that has been sitting in a box for the past 3 years into a Google Assistant using the Google AIY Voice Kit.  The Google AIY Voice Kit includes the following:

  • Voice HAT Accessory Board, Voice HAT Microphone Board.
  • 2 x Plastic Standoffs, 3" Speaker, Arcade-style Push Button.
  • 4-wire Button Cable, 5-wire Daughter Board Cable, External Cardboard Box.
  • Internal Cardboard Frame, Lamp, Micro-switch, Lamp Holder.

We will order this kit from Amazon.  The cost will be just under $60 CDN.  Please note, this does not include the actual Raspberry PI (which we already had).

How To Re-Image A Raspberry PI

The first step for this project is to re-image our Raspberry PI.  There was an image on there from 3 years ago.  The admin password is long lost and the software would be out of date anyway. In order to re-image our Raspberry PI we first downloaded SD Card Formatter and did an "overwrite format" of our card.  Once the SD Card was formatted we downloaded Raspbian from the Raspberry PI website.

The next step was to download Etcher.  Etcher will allow us to write the downloaded Raspbian files as an image. Once Etcher was downloaded and installed we uncompressed the Raspbian download and selected it as the "image" with Etcher.

Once the image has been written to the SD Card.  Simply place the SD Card (in its micro version) into the chip in the chip on your Raspberry PI.  This acts as the drive and OS for the Raspberry PI.

Connect your Raspberry PI to a monitor, network cable, power source, add a keyboard and a mouse and let it boot up.  Once the Raspberry PI has booted you can set a password and use it essentially like you would any Windows or macOS computer.

We are still waiting on the delivery of our Google AIY Voice Kit.  Once we have that kit we will release part II of this project.
